Vicky Kaushal on Diverse Film Roles

Have you ever experienced any bad news in real life?

Whenever you hear bad news in real life, no comedy is involved. It is a very serious affair. You get solace and peace being with your family. They are the ones who share a strong bond with you. My family has always stood beside me, sharing our sorrows and joys together. We have never hidden anything, be it the family struggles, etc. I hail from a much protected upbringing, and I am proud of it.

Having made serious films like Sardar Udham and Sam Bahadur, what other genres are you looking forward to working in?

I still have to work in different genres. The films I watched growing up are especially on my bucket list. My friends are happy watching me in the Tauba Tauba song as they know how happy I feel performing such dancing numbers. Now, they keep telling me-Tera keeda finally nikal gaya. I have so much to do. But it will be seen only when I get such varied films. I like to work in a mix of genres—intense, comedy, and entertaining films. Though I have been associated with intense films like Sam Bahadur and Sardar Udham Singh, you have to shoulder huge responsibilities. Having said that, if I get an intense story, I will not let it go. In comedy films, you can easily explore and spread your wings unlimitedly.

What was Katrina’s reaction to the latest dance number, Tauba Tauba? Any advice from Katrina?

I have not done any formal dance training. I am like a Baraati [marriage crowd] dancer. I dance for my happiness. But while performing a dance number for the camera, you must dance according to the camera’s movements. However, my free dancing style this time matched the camera movement. So, this time, I got full marks in appreciation from Katrina for Tauba Tauba. She admired my dancing style and felt that my dancing was cool. She also tagged me as a “Cool dancer” for Tauba Tauba.

How have the characteristic differences between you and Katrina been beneficial in progressing your relationship so well? Who is more romantic?

I am very practical, while she is emotionally sensitive and also very intelligent. Thus, our gap fills up very nicely. I have also started seeing things from an emotional point of view from the time she entered my life, and she has started seeing things practically. I am possessive and romantic, but sometimes I express myself overtly, while other times I am not very expressive. She is more romantic at heart. My romanticism varies from time to time.

Being busy professionally, how do you spare some free time for each other?

Our jobs do not follow any structured pattern; we don’t have to attend straight shifts like 9 to 5 or so. Our job has its schedule. It can happen regularly or with gaps. We sometimes work all through the weekends and vice versa. Whatever time we get, we spend together -we greatly value that time. For example, even if we get to spend a week at a stretch, we sit at home and watch TV leisurely while sipping cups of coffee. Doing all this, we get a lot of contentment and a feeling of togetherness.

Would you like to share something about your pre-parenting process?

Kaun sa process? These are all speculations. Humne thodi na bola aapko. I am clarifying; it’s all speculation. Iss mein koi sachchayi nahi hai. Whenever it happens, we will inform ourselves. I will be the most excited person on this earth.

On being a good husband:

I am just understanding what a husband means. After 25 years of marriage, people don’t understand the meaning of being a husband. I feel that I have become mature since I married Katrina. She is wise; she has achieved everything on her own individually. We all know she hails from somewhere and has worked hard on her language; she was an outsider, yet she has achieved stardom, which is very difficult. She has seen ups and downs, so her opinion and nazariya [outlook] is much sorted. It feels great as she has achieved all in her life independently.

On giving space to partners:

Every couple should discover what works for them in a relationship. It’s each to their own. Something that may work for one couple may not work for another. I feel that rather than living by examples, especially in relationships, we should always experience and find ways that work for our relationship and implement that in our everyday.
