Artistes of the Oven

The aroma of freshly baked bread or pie is both an alluring and comforting reminder of homecoming. The talented home bakers in Bengaluru are a one-man army when it comes to making sweet and savoury delights for all occasions. Here’s a comprehensive list of home bakers of Bengaluru who are armed with an exhaustive menu of sweet and savoury baked delights, by Surela Mukherjee.

Dr Archana Diwan- Cupohlicious

Dr Archana Diwan, a dentist by profession and now an award-winning home baker, started her venture Cupohlicious 10 years ago to break the monotony of her job. She reminiscences, “I sifted through recipe and baking books and watched cake shows on TLC during my leisuretime as YouTube was not a big thing then. The desire to bake desserts like the ones I saw on tv or in recipe books made me start baking cupcakes. I started attending baking workshops to learn special tips and tricks from national and international artists who came down to India. Receiving the Guinness World Record and Limca Book of Records was a huge morale booster apart from the constant encouragement that kept me going. I thought perhaps this is what I always wanted to do; thus, these I continued my work in this field.”

Her forte lies in making structural cakes which have a metal structure inside, around which the cake is baked, giving it an illusion of hanging. Most of Archana’s orders, whether desserts, cakes or savouries are tweaked to the liking of her clients, thus there is no fixed menu. She customises the flavour, colour and design of the cake according to her clien’s preferences.

Apart from desserts, Cupohlicious offers flat breads, stuffed buns, pizzas, garlic breads, pies, and quiches. Savouries are available in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options and special filling is available upon request too.

Archana tantalises the taste buds of her clients by offering something special for every occasion and festival. So, for Christmas you can expect rich and boozy plum cakes and delicious homemade wine.

Oiya Panjim Review: Best Mediterranean Food in Goa

From what might just be Goa’s best pita bread to rich muhammara and light shawarmas, Oiya proves that great Mediterranean food doesn’t need to shout. Tucked into the colourful lanes of Fontainhas, Oiya brings together flavours from Turkey, Greece, Spain and the wider Mediterranean with a menu that feels thoughtful, comforting and refreshingly unpretentious. Founded by entrepreneur Vishal Salgia, whose travels across Turkey and the Mediterranean inspired much of the concept, the restaurant focuses less on theatrics and more on getting the food right, and that’s exactly where it shines. The meal began with what was genuinely one of the best pita breads I’ve had. Served warm with just enough char on the edges, it arrived soft, airy and impossibly fresh. Before we started, the server suggested we “smell, cut and dip,” and strangely enough, it completely changed the experience. Paired with the muhammara, the table went silent for a moment. Smoky, nutty, slightly sweet and rich without becoming heavy, it was easily one of the strongest dishes of the evening. Oiya’s Mediterranean influence leans softer and creamier compared to sharper Middle Eastern interpretations. Their hummus and dips carry a richness that feels indulgent yet balanced, making even simple dishes memorable. The veg pide followed and immediately stood out because of the bread itself, crisp at the edges with a pillowy centre that tasted unmistakably house-made. The chicken shawarma was another highlight: light, juicy and deeply flavourful without the greasiness that often comes with the dish elsewhere. Everything felt balanced and clean instead of overloaded. Then came the mutton lahmacun, thin, crisp and layered with beautifully spiced minced meat that carried just enough heat without overpowering the dish. Nothing at Oiya felt overworked. Every plate arrived with restraint and confidence. The owner confidently claimed they serve “the best falafel in
