For Sarishti, travel isn’t about ticking destinations off a list it’s about feeling the soul of a place. She immerses herself in cultures, connects with people, and never skips a chance to try local food. Through her platform @theNomadicKat, she reminds her audience that you don’t need to quit your 9-to-5 to live a life of adventure just curiosity, courage, and maybe a weekend (or two).
Featured Destination: Japan
Why I Recommend It:
“Japan completely captured my heart,” says Sarishti. “It’s a country of contrasts where futuristic skylines meet ancient shrines. One moment you’re surrounded by Tokyo’s neon glow, and the next, you’re standing under maple trees in complete silence. It makes you pause and truly feel the beauty of life.”
What Makes It Special:
“What I love most about Japan is how seamlessly it balances calm and chaos. It’s organized yet full of surprises. The people are kind, the food is incredible (yes, even at convenience stores!), and there’s a mindfulness in everything from a cup of matcha to the way a leaf falls in autumn. It’s poetic simplicity at its best.”
Top 3 Must-Do Experiences:
1. Soak in an Onsen (Hot Spring Bath) – A deeply traditional experience that embodies Japan’s philosophy of slowing down and rejuvenating.
2. Visit Fushimi Inari at sunrise – Thousands of orange Torii gates line a quiet mountain trail, offering a surreal, almost spiritual experience.
3. Dine at a live grill – Watch chefs cook with precision and flair, turning every meal into a cozy, aromatic performance.
Best Local Dish or Drink:
“It’s impossible to pick one favourite!” laughs Sarishti. “But my top picks would be Okonomiyaki in Kyoto’s Nakagyo Ward, Melon Bread Ice Cream in Osaka’s Dotonbori, and the iconic Egg & Mayo Sandwich from 7-Eleven Japan’s most underrated delight.”
One Thing Travelers Should Know:
“Japan runs on respect in the smallest gestures and quietest moments. From speaking softly on trains to handling cash with both hands, everything is rooted in mindfulness. It’s not about rules; it’s about harmony.”
Insider Tip:
“Pack light! No matter how much you plan not to shop, Japan will test your willpower. From skincare and stationery to snacks and souvenirs, you’ll want it all. Leave room in your suitcase it’s part of the adventure!”
Quick Travel Q&A with Sarishti Katyal
What inspired you to start traveling and sharing online?
It began with childhood road trips to Himachal with my dad behind the camera he unknowingly sparked my love for storytelling. Years later, a motorbike trip from Manali to Ladakh with my now-husband reignited that passion, and I knew I wanted to share India’s beauty with others.
Are you a planner or a spontaneous explorer?
Definitely a planner! I love researching every detail from hidden gems to local eats. But I always leave space for unplanned moments. That’s where the best stories happen.
One destination that pleasantly surprised you?
Goa during monsoons. Most people think of it as a party spot, but in the off-season it’s lush, peaceful, and full of hidden treasures like the waterfalls at Netravali Sanctuary, Divar Island, and Galgibaga Beach, where turtles nest. It’s a whole new Goa.
How do you choose your next destination?
I follow my curiosity whether it’s a cuisine, a culture, or a landscape I’ve dreamt of. Fun fact: my husband and I chose Italy for our honeymoon purely because of our love for Italian food!
One travel essential you never leave home without?
My camera. I can travel light, but I can’t travel without capturing memories. Photos are my digital journal a way to relive moments long after the journey ends.
